Breaking down is the last thing anybody wants, especially if you are on the way to work or travelling back from the school run. For most of us, we probably don’t know what’s gone wrong or how to fix it, and chances are it was probably unavoidable.

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t help you prevent a car breakdown and an expensive one at that. Here are some handy tips and tricks to avoiding expensive car breakdowns…

Keep Your Fluids At A Good Level…

One of the best ways to help avoid an expensive car breakdown is to ensure that your car’s fluid levels are topped up and at optimal levels. It is important to check fluids such as screen wash. Brake fluid, engine oil and coolant, transmission fluid and power steering fluid.

Without these fluids being regularly checked, your car could be at risk of breaking down as problems such as your brakes seizing up, start to arise.

Check Your Tyres…

Tyres are another important thing to check before making any car journey. Be sure to check the pressure and tread depth of your tyres to ensure they are at the correct amount for the make and model of your car and the legal requirements. It is also worth checking the condition of your tyres, excessive wear and test can result in a potential blow out.

Take Time To Review Your Car…

Even if you have an old or new car, it is always best to take the time to check your vehicle. Review your manual and ensure you keep up to date with your car’s maintenance timeline. Recommended stages include:

Every 15,000 miles

  • Replace your wiper blades
  • Replace engine oil
  • Replace the engine, oil and in-cabin air filters

Every 30,000 miles – Additional to the above you should also:

  • Replace engine coolant
  • Replace fuel filter
  • Replace power steering and transmission fluids

Get Your Vehicle Regularly Serviced…

Every car is different so to help you avoid an expensive car breakdown, it is always advisable to also take your car to be regularly serviced. Running a full service on your car will allow an engineer to check your car for any problems, which then means they can be repaired before any major problems arise.
